What is Japanese Curry Poutine?

Japanese Curry Poutine is a fusion dish that combines classic Canadian poutine with Japanese curry sauce. Traditional poutine consists of crispy fries, cheese curds and gravy. In this version, the gravy is replaced with thick, savoury Japanese curry made with onions and carrots simmered in a flavourful curry roux. What’s the result? A rich and comforting dish with layers of flavour, crispy texture and melty cheese goodness. I think this is my best fusion dish yet!

Here’s Why You Will Love Japanese Curry Poutine

  • It’s Vegetarian: Sometimes I am craving a meatless appetizer. This is one of them!
  • Healthier Option: Not only do you save time by cooking the fries in the air fryer, you also reduce the intake of calories vs deep frying.
  • Ultimate Comfort Food: The combination of crispy fries, warm curry and melted cheese curds creates the perfect cozy dish.
  • Easy to Make: Using Japanese curry roux blocks makes this recipe simple and approachable for home cooks.
  • A Fusion Twist: It blends Japanese flavors with a Canadian classic, making it a unique dish for parties, game nights or casual dinners.

Ingredients

Alright, let’s make our shopping list! To make this recipe, you will need…

French Fries: Crispy fries form the base of the dish. You can use frozen fries, air fryer fries, or homemade fries. In this recipe, I use frozen fries in the air fryer.

Butter: Salted butter adds a warmth to this dish. Substitute for a neutral oil if desired.

Japanese Curry Roux: Japanese curry blocks provide deep flavor and thickness to the sauce. Two cubes are all you need.

Onion: Adds sweetness and depth to the curry.

Carrot: Adds natural sweetness and texture.

Water and milk: Used to create the curry sauce and balance the spices.

Cheese Curds: Classic poutine uses cheese curds that melt slightly while keeping their signature squeak.

Green onions: Adds freshness and colour as a garnish. I wouldn’t skip out on this garnish!

Storage and Reheating Tips

Once assembled, this dish is best eaten fresh.

Store leftover curry sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Reheat the curry on the stove or in the microwave until hot. For best results, cook fresh fries when serving again so they stay crispy.

Make Ahead Options

The Japanese curry sauce can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for several days. When ready to serve, simply reheat the curry and pour it over freshly cooked fries and cheese curds.

Recipe Tips

Use hot fries so the cheese curds melt slightly when the curry is poured on top.

If the curry becomes too thick, add a splash of water to loosen it.

Let the curry simmer long enough for the vegetables to become soft and flavourful.

Serve immediately for the best texture and flavour.
