Chocolate Dipped Flat Croissant with Matcha is a pastry creation that combines rich chocolate and subtle bitterness of matcha with the buttery goodness of a croissant. You are probably wondering why I would flatten a croissant with beautiful and delicate layers. I was hesitant at first but trust me, it works! It’s like a caramelized, sweet, buttery disc – perfect with a cup of tea.
I buy my croissants from Costco. The twelve pack can be hard to finish. With day-old croissants, they lose their light and crispy texture so it’s perfect for making these flat croissants! Plus, you will save money by making these yourself instead of buying them from a cafe.

How to Make Chocolate Dipped Flat Croissant with Matcha
Let’s make this dish!
Prepare the croissant. Working with one croissant at a time, flatten the pastry with a rolling pin.
Cook the flat croissant. Preheat a large, non-stick pan over low-medium heat. Add 1 tbsp of unsalted butter and swirl it to coat the bottom of the pan. Place the croissant in the pan and coat both sides with butter. Sprinkle 1/2 tsp of sugar on each side of the croissant. Cover with a sheet of parchment paper and a cast iron pan to flatten the croissant. Cook 2 minutes, flip and cook for another 2 minutes until caramelized and crispy. Remove from pan.
Make the ganache. Chop the chocolate into small pieces. Place the chocolate and cream in a heatproof bowl. Heat in a microwave for 30 second increments. Gently stir the chocolate and cream together until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth and glossy. Mine took 1.5 minutes.
Finish and serve. Hold each croissant and dip it halfway into the chocolate dip, allowing any excess chocolate to drip off. Spoon if you need. Place the chocolate-dipped croissants on parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Sprinkle matcha powder over the chocolate-dipped portion of the croissants. Set in refrigerator for 15 minutes.
Chocolate Dipped Flat Croissant with Matcha Options and Substitutions
Want to mix things up with this recipe? Feel free to…
- Experiment with different types of chocolate such as dark, milk, or white chocolate, or even flavored varieties like mint or orange-infused chocolate.
- Use chopped chocolate bars for a higher quality result. Avoid chocolate chips.
- Substitute the cream with whole milk, half-and-half, or even coconut cream for a dairy-free alternative. Heavy cream provides richness to the chocolate dip.
- Experiment with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or chili powder for a unique flavour twist.
- Consider different toppings like chopped nuts (such as almonds, hazelnuts, or pecans), shredded coconut, crushed pretzels, edible gold or dried fruit.
Storage and Reheating Tips
Storage:
- Room Temperature: Chocolate-dipped croissants can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container or wrapped tightly in plastic wrap for an additional day. Ensure they are kept in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the chocolate from melting or the croissants from becoming stale.
- Refrigeration: If you need to store chocolate-dipped croissants for a longer period, you can refrigerate them for up to two days. Place them in an airtight container or sealable plastic bag to prevent them from absorbing any odors in the refrigerator.
- Freezing: For longer-term storage, chocolate-dipped croissants can be frozen. Wrap each croissant individually in plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be frozen for up to 1-2 months. Thaw frozen croissants overnight in the refrigerator. Keep in mind that it won’t be as crispy.
Reheating: I do not recommend reheating as the chocolate will melt off the croissant.
Make Ahead Options
I do not recommend making this ahead of time. The flat croissants are best enjoyed right away because it’s crispy plus it comes together quickly.
Recipe Tips
Opt for high-quality chocolate for the best flavour and texture. Avoid chocolate chips.
Use day old croissants. Make sure your store bought croissant is made with butter. The butter in the croissant ensures that this will turn out flaky. Costco is the best option here.
Place the chocolate-dipped croissants on a wire rack or parchment paper-lined baking sheet to cool, allowing any excess chocolate to drip off.
Sprinkle toppings over the chocolate-dipped croissants while the chocolate is still wet so that they stick properly.
Serve Chocolate Dipped Flat Croissant with Matcha alongside a cup of hot coffee, tea, or a glass of milk for a perfect pairing.
